Symphonia Concertante K297b Adagio

Sweet divine sadness -

A kind of inner demented ecstasy,

A sort of meditative melancholy,

And endless spin into outer galaxies

Of mind-trance, in exquisite beauty

And inexplicable, unique wonder.

With your silvery shimmering pain,

That beauty slips up my freezing spine,

Music of inexpressible freezing pain,

Dancing in the intense beauty of ecstatic night,

Where agony rolls and spirals in endless rounds,

Rotations of ever-intensifying repetition of sounds

Like sequined subtelty of a magician-harlequin,

Scattering with a slip, massed spangles of stars,

lnto beauteous patterns of rainbow-coloured sparkles, -

O, grip like wires of diamond my throttled tears!
